What is DNS?

Domain Name System, or DNS, is the system that translates human-friendly domain names to numerical IP addresses. DNS is what allows you to type in “www.example.com” instead of “198.0.0.1” into your web browser.

DNS is a decentralized system that consists of many different servers around the world. When you type a domain name into your web browser, your computer will contact a DNS server and request the IP address for that domain. The DNS server will then look up the IP address and return it to your computer.

DNS servers are organized into hierarchies, with each level of the hierarchy containing multiple servers. This hierarchy helps to ensure that DNS queries are answered quickly and accurately.

The root level of the DNS hierarchy contains thirteen “root servers”. These thirteen servers are spread out across the globe and contain the IP addresses for all of the top-level domains (TLDs), such as “.com”, “.org”, and “.net”.

When you type a domain name into your web browser, your computer first contacts one of these thirteen root servers. The root server then directs your computer to a TLD server that contains the IP address for the requested domain.
