What is FDD?

A floppy disk drive (FDD) is a data storage device that is used to store, read and write data on a floppy disk. A floppy disk is a thin, flexible disk made of mylar or polycarbonate that is coated with a magnetic material. The FDD reads and writes data on the floppy disk by using a read/write head.

The FDD was invented in 1971 by IBM engineer Alan Shugart. It was first used in the IBM Model 5150 personal computer, which was released in 1981. The FDD became popular in the 1980s as a way to store large amounts of data on personal computers. However, the advent of the hard disk drive (HDD) in the 1990s led to the decline of the FDD.

Today, the FDD is not commonly used in personal computers. However, it is still used in some industrial applications where its low cost and portability are advantageous.
