The Republic of Guinea, commonly known as Guinea, is a west African country located on the Atlantic coast. The country is bordered by Senegal to the northwest, Mali to the northeast, Ivory Coast to the southeast, and Liberia and Sierra Leone to the southwest. Guinea has an area of 245,857 square kilometers and a population of 12.4 million people. The capital and largest city is Conakry.
Guinea is a tropical country with a warm climate. The terrain is mostly flat coastal plain with mountains in the interior. The country has abundant natural resources, including bauxite, iron ore, gold, and diamonds.
The official language of Guinea is French. Other languages spoken in the country include Susu, Fulani, Malinke, and Soussou. Islam is the predominant religion in Guinea.
Guinea was colonized by France in the 19th century. The country gained independence from France in 1958. Since then, it has been through several political upheavals and military coups. In 2010, Alpha Conde was elected president in the first free and fair elections held in the country since independence.
