What is ICMR?
ICMR stands for the Indian Council of Medical Research. It is an autonomous body that is responsible for the promotion and coordination of biomedical research in India.
The ICMR was established in 1911 as the Indian Research Fund Association. It was later renamed as the Indian Council of Medical Research in 1949. The ICMR is headquartered in New Delhi and has regional offices in all parts of India.
The ICMR is funded by the Government of India and its main objective is to promote and coordinate biomedical research in India. The ICMR also provides grants to Indian scientists for carrying out medical research.
The ICMR has played a major role in the development of vaccines for various diseases, such as polio, cholera, and typhoid. It has also helped to develop new drugs for treating various diseases, such as tuberculosis and leprosy.
The ICMR is a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) and is recognised as a scientific and medical research organisation by the WHO.
