What is RTO?
Regional Transport Office, or RTO, is an organization that deals with the registration of vehicles and driving licenses in India. RTOs are present in every state of India.
The full form of RTO is Regional Transport Officer. The main function of an RTO is to issue driving licenses and vehicle registration certificates. RTOs also collect taxes and fees related to vehicle registration and driving license issuance. In addition, RTOs are responsible for enforcing traffic laws and regulations.
RTOs were established by the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. The act mandates that all vehicles must be registered with an RTO in order to be driven on Indian roads. RTOs maintain records of all registered vehicles and their owners.
