What is TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate parts of the brain. The pulses cause temporary changes in brain activity, which can improve symptoms in people with conditions like depression and chronic pain.
TMS is usually done as an outpatient procedure. Patients take a prescription medication before the procedure, and then receive a series of five to 10 electromagnetic pulses over the course of about 20 minutes. The pulses are designed to target specific areas of the brain.
The benefits of TMS are often short-lived, but it can be very effective in treating certain conditions. It is not currently approved to treat any mental disorders, but there is growing evidence that it may be useful in treating some forms of depression and chronic pain.
